It looks too much like the cultural imperialism Canada waged against its indigenous people for me to be comfortable with it.

Except Canadians are Europeans who crossed an ocean to occupy land belonging to someone else. Xinjiang is a cross-roads in the region that is a multi-cultural mixture with a Uyghur plurality that developed it’s own culture intermixing with various social developments, including Han Chinese, for centuries. Meanwhile, the Dalai Lama’s brother wrote in his memoirs that he regrets working with the US and the CIA because they were literally training, arming, planning, coordinating, and fucking airlifting terrorists into Tibet to destabilize China by killing a bunch of people. Xinjiang, being another autonomous region of China, like Tibet, was experiencing very violent terrorist attacks and unsurprisingly is physically connected to the Eastern portions of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and other West Asian countries in which the CIA, MI6, and Mossad have been repeatedly exposed for co-opting and cultivating radical forms of Islam and arming, training, coordinating, funding, and even embedding with terrorist organizations to do things like fight communism since the 1960s.

The two situations couldn’t be more different. China’s anti-terrorism program has been shown to be effective, and the Arab League (of dozens of nations) has visited Xinjiang and reviewed the work and found it to be respectful to Islam and the Uyghur people. The Uyghur population in Xinjiang has grown at greater than replacement rate every year, and the average household income, level of literacy, life expectancy, health outcomes, and basically every measure of social thriving has increased in Xinjiang since the program was implemented.
