A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot and killed a Mexican citizen, identified as Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, during a targeted enforcement operation in Houston on Tuesday morning, according to the Department of Homeland Security and local officials.

The incident occurred around 6:50 a.m. local time when agents attempted to stop Salgado’s vehicle. The DHS stated that the man ignored orders to stop, struck an official vehicle, and attempted to run over an agent, prompting the agent to fire in alleged self-defense. Salgado was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.

The FBI’s Houston office is investigating a possible assault on a federal agent and has deployed agents to the scene. Evidence response teams processed the area at DHS’s request. Authorities have not released details on the number of shots fired, the agent’s identity, or whether recordings exist.

Representative Sylvia García called for preserving and reviewing all recordings and evidence as part of a full and impartial investigation. LULAC Executive Director Juan Proaño said his organization does not trust DHS’s account and called for an independent investigation with full video release.

ICE makes more than 10,000 arrests in a five‑day period in late June as part of the administration’s enforcement push. Houston has experienced increased police operations since the crackdown began, drawing public criticism. The City Council initially voted to limit cooperation with ICE but reversed course after Governor Greg Abbott threatened to cut over $100 million in public safety funding.

This case is not unprecedented. In January, Renee Good, a 37‑year‑old U.S. citizen also identified by other sources as Renée Goodman, was shot in the head by a federal immigration agent during a raid in Minneapolis, and another U.S. citizen, Alex Pretty, was also killed in the same operation, according to DHS and local officials, as questions emerged over the agency’s account of the incident.

The DHS stated that Good attempted to run over the agent with her vehicle, but local officials and witnesses disputed that claim, asserting she was only trying to flee.
