    A federal judge eventually ordered the state to provide unmonitored phones for legal calls, to which the DeSantis administration responded by arguing it would be too costly for Florida taxpayers, despite the nearly $1 billion already spent to set up and run the facility. The estimated cost of unmonitored phone access would be about $180,025, plus an additional maintenance cost of $6,283. Adding insult to injury, the state of Florida has spent more than three times that amount paying a private law firm to fight against the expansion of phone access.
