“Security forces opened fire on residents of Warlaaliska, who had gathered to protest against forced evictions and the illegal destruction of their properties. Initial reports confirm, so far, three deaths and multiple serious injuries,” Khaire stated on the social network X.

The former prime minister imputed to the Government “full responsibility for this tragic loss of life.”

The former president urged the Police to “stop the violence, protect the citizens they swore to defend, and end the suffering they are inflicting on our people.”

More than 200 homes were demolished in a coordinated surprise operation that began this morning in the Warlaaliska neighborhood, in the capital’s Daynile district, local media reported.

Residents claim that the land has been sold to a wealthy businessman linked to Somali President Hassan Cheikh Mohamoud.

The demolitions occur despite previous government assurances that the neighborhood would not be affected, after an earlier confrontation in which residents opposed the entry of security forces into the area.

Somalia has been in a state of conflict and chaos since 1991, when dictator Mohamed Siad Barre was overthrown, leaving the territory without an effective government and in the hands of Islamist militias and warlords.
