Around 1.2 million customers of the defunct Ueno bank in Paraguay have received their funds back in the last two days, after the start of deposit guarantee payments was announced on Thursday, the Central Bank (BCP) reported this Saturday.

In a press conference after a meeting with the new Paraguayan president, Pedro Alliana, the interim head of the issuing entity, Pedro Acosta, detailed that the transfers amount to 996 billion guaraníes or the “equivalent of 160 million dollars.”

The closure of Ueno bank due to solvency problems triggered one of the biggest political crises in this South American country, which led to the impeachment of President Santiago Peña and the resignation of the former head of the BCP, Carlos Carvallo, both accused of their links with the liquidated entity and currently detained as part of a process that also involves the bank’s directors.

“In the two days that we have already made payments, Thursday and Friday, we have already reached a total of 1,196,000 people who have already benefited from the payment of the state guarantee,” Acosta affirmed from the Palacio de López, where Alliana went very early this Saturday, hours after being sworn in.

The interim head of the BCP indicated that the first round of disbursements covered amounts from one to 10 million guaraníes (about 1,601.60 dollars) and a second from 10 million guaraníes to 40 minimum wages, which are equivalent to 121.7 million guaraníes (about 19,787 dollars).

The closure of Ueno, with 2.94 million customers in a country of 6.1 million inhabitants, affected, among others, some 32,000 retirees who received their payments through accounts in that financial institution, where 355 million dollars from the Social Security Institute (IPS), one of the largest pension funds in the country, as well as resources from other state entities, are also invested.

In this regard, the president of the IPS, Derlis León, announced at the same press conference that the more than 90,000 retirees in the country will collect their salaries and Christmas bonuses “on time and in due form” next November 17.

Likewise, he explained that the 32,000 retirees who received their pensions at Ueno are finishing the migration process “to 8 local banks.”

On Wednesday, one day after Ueno’s intervention, Peña, then in power, enacted a law approved in record time by Congress to expedite the delivery, within a minimum period of 24 hours, of the resources withheld from thousands of customers in the intervened bank.

The BCP ordered a resolution or closure process for Ueno on Tuesday after detecting that its solvency ratio had fallen below half of the required minimum.
