And Okinawa is being transformed into a military stronghold. Yonaha argues that the “China threat” narrative driving that buildup has no basis in reality, and that it is amplified by right-wing internet users and pro-government media. “We wonder how long the Japanese and US governments will continue to lie and deceive the people of Okinawa,” she states. She warns that younger Okinawans, while anxious about being sacrificed again, may not grasp the true nature of the conflict — and calls on international media to amplify voices from the island.
