Don’t Let JD Vance Weasel Out of This

So, the MAGA movement has finally burst like the rotten carcass it is. Unless you were around for the Reagan/Mondale election in 1984, Tuesday night’s midterm results could be the most lopsided political thumping you’ll see in your lifetime. It’s not just that the Democrats took control of both the House and Senate with comfortable majorities, leaving President Trump stranded to deal with a hostile legislature in 2027, and John Fetterman powerless to help him. (Seriously, John, just resign already.) It’s also the fact that Republicans lost what, according to conventional wisdom, should have been their safest seats. Texas. Kansas. South Carolina. At the time of writing, maybe Mississippi. Even Louisiana came within less than two points. The bedrock assumptions of American politics just got re-written, and with them, the roadmap to the presidency in 2028. At the Guardian, Moira Donegan writes that “the death knell of Trumpism has finally sounded.” That might be slightly too optimistic, but it’s undeniable that the GOP has taken a body blow.
