The aircraft will be able to carry up to 907 kilograms of experimental equipment.

On Wednesday, NASA unveiled the X-70 Fractal, a new experimental crewed aircraft designed to test advanced aeronautical technologies and contribute to developing future generations of aircraft.

The presentation took place at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, where the agency explained that it expects to conduct the first flight of this platform within the next two years.

Unlike spacecraft, the X-70 will operate within Earth’s atmosphere and serve as a testbed for investigating new flight capabilities under real-world conditions. The aircraft will be able to carry up to 907 kilograms of experimental equipment, both in internal compartments and on external points installed on the aircraft’s structure.

One of its key features is a reconfigurable control system that will allow for the study of maneuverability and aeronautical behavior that has not yet been demonstrated in crewed flights.

Its modular design will allow the rapid replacement of instruments and payloads and facilitate the development of multiple research projects without requiring extensive modifications to the aircraft between tests.

The X-70 is designed to reach a cruising speed of Mach 0.75, fly at altitudes of up to 13,716 meters, and travel more than 2,700 kilometers without refueling. It joins the historic X-Series of U.S. experimental aircraft.

The project is part of a broader strategy to drive aeronautical innovation and develop solutions that can later be applied in civil, scientific, and technological aviation. The agency believes the X-70 will provide a flexible tool for validating new ideas directly in flight.
