On Thursday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said she believes that immigration raids and episodes of discrimination against Latinos in the United States may have influenced the voting outcome during the recent midterm elections.

The president stated that it is logical to think that the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) impacted the decision of many eligible Latino voters, favoring Democratic Party candidates.
Her statements came after the election results were announced, giving Democrats control of both houses of the U.S. Congress. Sheinbaum indicated that some Latino people who supported Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election opted to support Democratic candidates this time.
According to data from the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 17 Mexican citizens have died in the United States since 2025 during operations or while in ICE custody. A UnidosUS poll showed that 67% of Latino voters supported Democrats in the House of Representatives elections.
The same poll revealed that 17% of Hispanics who voted for Trump in 2024 changed their voter preference. However, it identified that the main concerns of Latino voters continue to be the cost of living and inflation, mentioned by 58% of respondents.

Immigration policies and ICE actions were secondary priorities for the Latino electorate, although they were mentioned by 27% of those surveyed. The Mexican president linked the discontent within the Latino community to the perception of measures targeting people based on their ethnicity or physical appearance.
The day before, Sheinbaum highlighted the victories of Democratic politicians of Mexican origin, including Xavier Becerra in California and Gina Hinojosa in Texas, as examples of growing Latino political participation in the United States.
To her, the election results reflect current needs of American society and demonstrate the increasing importance of the Latino vote in the country’s political processes.
The Latino community represents one of the fastest-growing voting blocs in the United States, and its behavior is considered increasingly decisive in national and state elections.
