Moratorio, 44, fought for his life and underwent several treatments for a glioblastoma, one of the most aggressive types of brain tumors.

In 2020, the specialized journal *Nature* named him one of the 10 most notable scientists of the year.

He headed the Laboratory for the Experimental Evolution of Viruses at the Institut Pasteur de Montevideo and served as a professor at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of the Republic. However, it was his role as a government advisor during the pandemic that brought him national and international renown.

Together with his colleagues, he developed national diagnostic tests for COVID-19, which, according to *Nature*, helped the country “avoid a cascade of infections and deaths.”

“Uruguay will be eternally grateful to him,” wrote President Yamandú Orsi on his X account.

Gonzalo Moratorio will be honored at the Legislative Palace. High-ranking government officials, lawmakers, and members of the scientific community are expected to attend.
