In the Musy Hall of the Civic Palace, the Cuban representative met with Turin’s Deputy Mayor, Michela Favaro, and the President of the City Council, Maria Grazia Grippo, to reaffirm their commitment to bilateral cooperation and solidarity initiatives within the healthcare sector.

CittAgora, a publication of the Turin City Council, noted on its Facebook page that Guerra Izquierdo had led the Cuban “Henry Reeve” medical brigade, which provided services in Turin during the initial phase of the COVID-19 emergency in Italy.

It was reported that, during the discussion, the Cuban Deputy Minister of Health outlined the challenges faced by hospitals in his country, where power supply interruptions are hindering the operation of numerous facilities.

For her part, Grippo remembered a resolution passed last March by the Turin City Council in support of the Cuban people, addressing the consequences of the blockade on oil supplies and the worsening energy crisis in the Caribbean nation.

The meeting also highlighted a project boosted by the Agency for Cultural and Economic Exchange with Cuba (AICEC), which aims to collect medicines for the island’s population with the collaboration of Turin’s municipal pharmacies.

Among the initiatives stands the procurement of an emergency electric generator for the hospital in Contramaestre, located in the eastern Cuban province of Santiago de Cuba; its shipment is scheduled for the coming days.

This Wednesday’s solidarity agenda continued with a public meeting titled “Healing Under Siege: The Blockade and the Cuban Healthcare System,” featuring the Cuban Deputy Minister, neurosurgeon Peggys Cruz Pérez, AICEC representative Roberto Forte, and Giorgia Vernetti, a member of the “Let Cuba Breathe” initiative.
