Fianna Fáil TD's son charged with theft and money laundering

The son of Sligo Fianna Fáil TD Eamon Scanlon – and a party election candidate himself – has been charged with 197 counts of theft, forgery and money laundering.

Barry Scanlon of Carrownanty, Ballymote in Sligo, appeared before Sligo District Court earlier this week accused of stealing more than €37,000 in training allowance payments from four people.

He was also charged with transferring property that was the proceeds of criminal conduct and forgery offences.

The DPP has directed that Scanlon be prosecuted on indictment at Sligo Circuit Criminal Court.

Scanlon was selected to run for Fianna Fáil at the 2009 local elections but withdrew weeks before the vote on medical grounds, noting that he would “continue to work in the constituency office of” his father.

The case was adjourned to April 1 2027.
