An AUKUS inquiry report released by Peter Garrett and former Australian defence chief Admiral Chris Barrie says agreement should be suspended and calls for royal commission.
What we know:
- The inquiry called the $368bn agreement the “worst, riskiest and most costly defence decision ever made by an Australian government” (The Nightly).
- Its report, titled Surrendering Australia: the Aukus Deception, says the presence of powerful nuclear submarines risks military conflict with China, while the deal weakens Australia’s sovereignty (The Guardian).
- The report recommends Australia “recalibrate” its alliance with the US to “emphasise Australia’s national sovereignty and independence” (Politico).
- “Whatever way you want to look at the future in this region, by 2050, China will be the world’s largest power, the world’s greatest power,” Barrie said on Wednesday, adding that “I worry about the contest between the United States and China” (SMH).
- Polling conducted by the United States Studies Centre in May found that while 48% of Australians believe having nuclear-power submarines is a good idea, only 23% agreed the Australian government had properly explained the rationale for AUKUS (Politico).
