Supporters of the Citizen Revolution party (RC) marched today in Riobamba, in Ecuador’s Chimborazo province, to demand the release of former presidential candidate Luisa Gonzalez.

At the Provincial Court of Justice of Chimborazo, RC president Gabriela Rivadeneira announced the filing of a habeas corpus petition in favor of González, according to reports circulated on social media.

“A struggle is never abandoned, a political prisoner is never abandoned, a persecuted person is never abandoned,” Rivadeneira said, describing González as a “kidnapped person”, victim of the Noboa administration.

Rivadeneira said the legal actions against the former candidate, who ran for the executive in 2023 and 2025, will not silence the political organization, Ecuador’s main opposition force.

“Luisa González means that: a leader backed by millions of Ecuadorian men and women; that is what hurts them, that while the government has more than 70 percent popular rejection, popular leaders are in the streets,” she underscored before the demonstrators.

She also called for not supporting candidates from the ruling movement National Democratic Action (ADN) in the local elections scheduled for next November 29.

Nearly 100 people marched through Ecuador’s capital, Quito, on Thursday to protest President Daniel Noboa’s government, sparking a new wave of demonstrations ahead of local elections on Nov. 29.

Amid slogans such as “Out, Noboa, out” and expressions of rejection of the government’s management, participants later marched to the Chimborazo Governor’s Office.

González has remained held at the Riobamba Women’s Deprivation of Liberty Center since Friday, October 23, after a judge ordered pretrial detention against her in the so-called Laberinto case.

The Prosecutor’s Office is investigating an alleged criminal structure that would have introduced more than 500,000 dollars of illicit origin into the RC’s 2023 presidential campaign, a party that has denied the accusations. The former candidate’s lawyer, Diego Guarderas, appealed the pretrial detention and argued that his client has employment, social and family ties in the country, so there would be no risk of flight.

Former President Rafael Correa (2007-2017), founder and leader of RC, denounced on Wednesday in several interviews with local media that there is a selective application of justice in Ecuador.

“We are very proud of Luisa; she always knew what she was risking,” Correa said, as he labeled the former candidate’s detention an “outrage” and an “aberration.”
