Nokia predicts that traffic originating from autonomous AI agents will increase 160-fold by 2035.

On Wednesday, Finnish company Nokia reported that global data traffic will quadruple by 2035, reaching approximately 3,789 exabytes per month, driven primarily by the growth of artificial intelligence.

The study estimates that artificial intelligence will account for 44% of all data traffic generated globally over the next decade, solidifying its position as one of the main drivers of digital transformation.

Nokia predicts that traffic originating from autonomous AI agents will increase 160-fold by 2035 compared to 2026 levels, which reflects the rapid expansion of these technologies.

Furthermore, so-called physical artificial intelligence, which includes robots, automated systems, and connected vehicles, will generate 105 times the current volume of data traffic during the same period.

The company warns that this increase will require significant changes to telecommunications networks, traditionally designed for downloading content, which will now need to adapt to a greater demand for data transmission and real-time responses.

According to the report, physical AI applications will generate more than 90% of their traffic by sending massive amounts of information to the network, requiring lower-latency connections and greater operational capacity.

Nokia also anticipates a transformation in global technological infrastructure, with greater decentralization of data processing and the development of AI networks closer to users, to meet the new demands for speed, efficiency, and digital sovereignty.
