During the 2026 Media Corporation Forum on Belt and Road, Prensa Latina Information Vice President Alejandro Gomez noted that the agency is a founding member of the Belt and Road News Network (BRNN) and its Council, and has witnessed the growth and consolidation of this media cooperation platform.
Gomez outlined the difficulties the agency faces in sustaining its international operations due to coercive measures against Cuba, including the closure of banking services for its correspondent office in Washington, financial obstacles in Italy, and the suspension of telephone and internet services in Mexico.
The PL vice president also mentioned the prolonged power outages affecting Prensa Latina’s headquarters in Havana, which is not exempt from Cuba’s situation, due to the energy siege imposed by the United States.
In this context, he called on media outlets from the Global South to join forces in sharing their own realities, despite the obstacles they face.
Meanwhile, Yoerky Sanchez Cuellar, editor-in-chief of the Granma newspaper, affirmed that collaboration among media outlets extends ties among civilizations and brings the peoples’ realities closer.
Sanchez Cuellar, who is also a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) and the Council of State, pointed out that the technological breakthrough and the expansion of digital platforms create challenges in distinguishing verified information from disinformation and can further entrench inequalities in the visibility of different societies.
Oscar Figueredo, Director of Content Creation at Ideas Multimedios, highlighted the collaboration between Cubadebate and People’s Daily newspaper, which have shared the column “Perspectives on the New China” for the last two years.
