Speaking to Spanish news agency EFE shortly after the announcement, Fernández Cubas said the decision had taken her completely by surprise. She described the award as a tremendous honor and expressed particular satisfaction that the jury had recognized her contribution to short fiction.

She also welcomed what she sees as broader recognition for the genre, saying the prize honored short-story writers as a whole.

Spanish Culture Minister Ernest Urtasun, who announced the jury’s decision, said the award recognized the originality, excellence and consistency of Fernández Cubas’s work, which has renewed the contemporary short story and transformed fantasy literature in Spanish.

Regarded as one of Spain’s leading short-story writers and a major figure in Spanish-language fantastic literature, Fernández Cubas is known for her narrative precision, mastery of perspective and use of silence and mystery.
