The Israeli forces withdrew from the West Bank southern city of Hebron on Monday, November 2, after carrying out an extensive military operation that saw the displacement of hundreds of families and massive destruction of residential buildings over the span of 11 days.
The operation, which included a full lockdown of the West Bank and was considered by many as a collective punishment of the entire Palestinian population in the occupied territory, was launched on October 23, after two Israeli soldiers were shot dead by two Palestinian men near a military checkpoint in the Farsh al-Hawa area.
According to Hebron Municipality, 15 homes and facilities were demolished in the assault, while 327 shops were closed, with direct daily economic losses estimated at roughly $3.8 million.
The municipality had earlier reported that at least 4,969 Palestinians from 780 families were displaced as a result of the offensive.
Meanwhile, the governor of Hebron, Khaled Doudin, stated that about 600 homes in the areas that were subjected to raids and searches by the Israeli military were damaged.
The operation ended, yet arrest campaigns and restriction on movement continue in the city
Although the large-scale operation in Hebron apparently ended, a sweeping arrest campaign was carried out on Tuesday, November 3, during which 21 Palestinians were detained by the Israeli army in Dura, southwest of the city.
On the same day, the army forced an extended family of 15 individuals to evacuate their home in the village of Al-Burj, southwest of Hebron, turning it into a military barrack.
Several checkpoints were also set up at the entrances of the city and different towns, villages and refugee camps within the governorate, while movement was further restricted with iron gates, concrete blocks, and earthen barriers being installed along main and side roads.
On the day of their withdrawal from the city, the Israeli forces stormed the campus of Kadoorie University, in the Al-Aroub area north of Hebron. One young man was briefly detained during the raid, but he was released before the troops departed the academic facility.
