Mexico City, November 3 (SinEmbargo).— Andrés Manuel López Beltrán charged that agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) went all the way to Argentina to offer protection and immunity to Fernando Farías Lagunas, a former Navy officer involved in a fiscal fuel-smuggling (huachicol fiscal) network, in exchange for cooperating against him and his father, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, former president of Mexico.

At the same time, he denied having intervened to favor Jorge Amílcar Olán Aparicio with government contracts, and denied that he is involved in fuel trafficking.

“Let me be clear: I have never spoken with any official of the Navy Ministry, either directly or by phone or by any other means, and the person who mentions me, and who also does so while admitting that he has no evidence, was arrested in Argentina, and US FBI agents went all the way there to offer him and his family protection and immunity in exchange for cooperating with a foreign country against me, against Andrés Manuel López Obrador and against the Government of Mexico,” he asserted.

Through a video shared on his social media, López Beltrán denied having any relationship of complicity with Amílcar Olán or being his front man, and said he has no relationship with him at all.

“It doesn’t hurt to clarify, as we did more than two years ago, that we never had knowledge of, nor interceded for or recommended anyone to obtain any kind of contract or business with the Federal or Local Public Administration. We are not the same, we are not influence peddlers, nor do we take part in any act of corruption, as they intend to accuse us of without evidence,” he stated.

In addition, he explained that he met the businessman some years ago in Villahermosa, Tabasco, through mutual friends, and detailed that at the time the businessman was dedicated to the sale and distribution of finishes, flooring, natural stone and construction materials, with no business relationships with any level of government.

The son of former president López Obrador also categorically rejected any link to the crime of fiscal fuel smuggling and said there is no evidence whatsoever that could prove his participation in or relationship with those illicit activities.

“There is not and never will be any evidence that implicates us or that can prove our participation or relationship at any level with this crime. We have never taken part in it, we never knew about it, and we would never have looked the other way if we had known. It is a vile lie and a slander,” he said.

López Beltrán Denounces a Smear Campaign

On this point, he maintained that the accusations are politically motivated and attributed the attacks to those who, he said, lost privileges with the arrival of the Fourth Transformation in the federal government.

“All of this is motivated by political interest. These attacks come from and are directed by those who were previously in power, and I don’t mean the parties or politicians who pretended to be in charge of the country, but those who truly ruled and wielded power: the potentates, the richest men in Mexico, the oligarchy, the great corrupt ones,” he said.

In this regard, the Morena member directly accused journalist Ramón Alberto Garza, businessman Ricardo Salinas Pliego, owner of TV Azteca, and commentator Carlos Loret de Mola of leading a campaign of slander against him and his father, with the aim of damaging his public image.

“I directly accuse Ramón Alberto Garza, who acts as an agent of foreign agencies in Mexico, Ricardo Salinas, owner of TV Azteca, Carlos Loret de Mola, who is always at the service of those corrupt people, and other media of manipulation, of leading, participating in and coordinating a campaign of slander against us,” he charged.

According to López Beltrán, the discontent of these sectors stems from the fact that under the new political project they had to pay taxes, abide by the law and respect national sovereignty, which is why they would seek to recover the privileges that, he said, they previously had.

Finally, López Beltrán said he will continue to defend his political convictions despite the accusations and warned that he will not give in to criticism.

You will keep accusing, lying, trying to deceive, but we will keep fighting as we have done all our lives, and remember what Andrés Manuel López Obrador once told you: history has yet to judge you and us. We are not afraid of you. We will not bend.
