Mexico City, November 3 (SinEmbargo).— Pope Leo XIV will visit the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City (CdMx), although the date of his trip has not yet been set, María Montserrat Alvarado, the Vatican’s new head of Communication, confirmed this Tuesday.
The Holy Father is indeed going to go see Our Lady of Guadalupe.

The Mexican official made the statement during the presentation of the program for the pontiff’s upcoming tour of Uruguay, Argentina and Peru, scheduled for November 6 to 17.
Alvarado explained that she will be “the first to announce Leo XIV’s trip to Mexico,” which will mark her tenure after taking office on November 1 as the first laywoman to head the Holy See’s press office.
Although the trip does not yet have a date on the calendar, the confirmation reveals the pontiff’s intention to go to Mexico’s main Marian shrine, one of the most important centers of Catholic pilgrimage in the world.
Leo XIV Could Visit Mexico During a Trip to the US
The possibility of the Pope coming to Mexican territory had already been mentioned by Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, the Holy See’s Secretary for Relations with States.
Last week, during a meeting with foreign journalists, Gallagher said that Leo XIV plans to travel to the United States “in the not-too-distant future” and that he is considering making a stop in Mexico to visit the shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe.
This possibility opens the door to both destinations being part of the same tour of North America, although the Vatican has not yet confirmed an itinerary or a schedule for the trip.
The trip would also come after President Claudia Sheinbaum extended him a formal invitation to visit the country, a gesture that coincided with the wish Leo XIV himself has expressed on other occasions to see the Basilica of Guadalupe, a place of deep value for millions of believers.

The Pope Really Wants to Come: Sheinbaum
The news will be well received by millions of faithful, after President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo shared in early August that the Vatican Secretary of State, Pietro Parolin, had informed her that Pope Leo XIV would not visit Mexico during his tour of Latin America (LA) in November, but that he really wanted to visit the country on another occasion.
“Although obviously he could not come to Mexico during the electoral period, we continue to extend the invitation to him. They told us that he really wants to come to Mexico and that, in any case, they would be looking at the date when he could come. There is still no set date,” she said during her morning press conference on August 8.
In that regard, she recalled that the inclusion of Uruguay and Argentina on the route had been planned from the beginning, since they are nations that Francis was unable to visit during his pontificate, but with today’s announcement, Leo XIV’s presence in Mexico is finally confirmed and all that remains is to set the official date on the calendar.
