Hundreds participated in a solidarity rally in Lahore, Pakistan, earlier this week, demanding an end to the oppressive decades-long US blockade and sanctions on Cuba and denouncing its targeting of Raul Castro, leader of the Cuban revolution and former president.
The participants raised slogans throughout the rally proclaiming the death of US imperialism and its inhuman blockade against the socialist nation. They expressed solidarity with Cuba, its people, the government, and Raul Castro in their fight against US hegemonic endeavors.
Hundreds of e-rickshaws decorated with red flags moved across Pakistan’s second largest city on Sunday. The riders of the rickshaws, which generally carry people going to work, were holding banners and posters displaying solidarity messages in Urdu, Cuban flags, and pictures of Raul Castro.
The rally was jointly called by the Mazdoor Kisan Party (MKP) and the Punjab Rickshaw Union (PRU) on the eve of the annual UN General Assembly vote on Cuba.
Cuba’s socialist revolutionary government has been facing US sanctions and blockade for decades now. The intensity of the blockade has increased since Donald Trump came to power for his second term in 2025 causing shortages of energy, food, and medicine to its population.
The Trump administration has also issued indictments against Castro (95) with an official in Florida issuing an “arrest warrant” against him earlier this month.
Washington’s illegal policies against Cuba, its government, and Castro have invited global condemnations. Several countries and groups across the world have organized Cuba solidarity events declaring that “Cuba is not alone.”
Cuba is not alone
The march in Lahore culminated in a meeting which was addressed by Taimur Rahman; general secretary of the MKP, Irfan Ali; leader of the PKU, and others.
Speaking in the meeting, Rahman declared that “Cuba was not alone” in its fight against imperialism and hegemonic policies. The fight of the Cuban people against imperialism is a fight of all the working class across the globe. He extended the solidarity of Pakistan’s working classes and called for greater mobilizations in solidarity with the Cuban people.
He also pointed out how the UNGA has repeatedly denounced the US policies towards Cuba. He noted that the overwhelming majority in the world are opposed to the inhuman US policies and underlined that the illegal US sanctions and criminal blockade have disrupted the normal life of millions of Cubans.
“Cuba is facing a genocidal blockade by imperialism. They literally are trying to starve the people into submission,” Rahman said in a post on X following the UNGA vote. He also pointed out the criminality of the Trump administration and Secretary of State Marco Rubio in particular.
The MKP reiterated its solidarity message during its annual meeting commemorating the historic anti-feudal struggles in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province on Wednesday.
On Wednesday, the UNGA adopted a resolution demanding an end to the inhuman imperialist blockade and sanctions on Cuba with an overwhelming majority of 130 countries voting in favor and only 27 voting against.
Defying pressure from the US, the majority of the countries in the UNGA, including Pakistan, have repeatedly voted on similar resolutions since the 1990s. Several leaders speaking during the discussion on the resolution earlier this week yet again highlighted how the US has disregarded the UN charter, international laws, and the will of the Cuban people in its attempts to seek dominance.
