Thousands marched in Washington, DC on Sunday for Nolan Wells, joining calls across the US for an impartial federal investigation into his death. The 18-year-old college football player was found dead off the Mississippi coast in July. Sunday’s “One March, Fifty States” day of action saw marches and prayer gatherings planned in every US state and in London. On the Mississippi Gulf Coast, hundreds marched across the Biloxi–Ocean Springs Bridge toward Wells’ hometown, calling on the Justice Department and FBI to review the case. Wells disappeared during a Fourth of July boat trip with white friends. His body was found in the water off Horn Island two days later. In September, a Jackson County grand jury declined to bring charges, saying evidence was consistent with drowning, despite the state autopsy report showing bruising on the back of Wells’s head and noting that no water was found in his lungs. The Justice Department has so far declined to open an investigation.
