Colombian Senator Iván Cepeda denounced on Sunday a smear campaign aimed at his judicialization at national and international levels to neutralize his recent debates in Congress.

Cepeda warned that the campaign seeks to stain his honor and discredit his moral authority in order to silence the parliamentary investigations he has carried out. He reaffirmed that his public career remains under principles of total transparency and said no mechanism of coercion or blackmail will stop his institutional oversight powers.

The warnings come after a Senate intervention on October 27 regarding the agrarian policy of the government of Abelardo de la Espriella and land administration, where he formalized criminal and disciplinary complaints against figures of the Executive and national politics.

In that session, Cepeda announced a complaint before the Investigation and Accusation Commission of the House of Representatives against President De la Espriella for alleged conspiracy to commit a crime, money laundering and forced displacement, based on commercial and property links with drug trafficking and paramilitary networks, including the case of Hugues Manuel Rodríguez Fuentes, alias commander Barbie, a cattle rancher convicted of drug trafficking and of promoting paramilitary groups.

Cepeda said the De La Espriella government, through the Agriculture Ministry led by Indalecio Dangond, intends to carry out a “counter-agrarian reform” that would halt land restitution to peasants, favor economic interests linked to mining and return confiscated lands to drug traffickers, paramilitaries and powerful mafia clans, according to the senator.

The senator’s political party, Historic Pact, issued a statement reiterating its unconditional support for his investigative work and political oversight, and denounced defamation campaigns.
