Iran designated the British Royal Navy and Royal Air Force as terrorist organizations and classified the UK’s foreign intelligence service MI6 as a hostile group, according to the Iranian Foreign Ministry.

On Sunday, the ministry said the measure responded to what it called hostile British actions against Iran over the past year, including London’s participation in the war imposed by the Washington and Tel Aviv.

It cited UK access to military and logistical bases and facilities granted to the United States during the war launched on Feb. 28, and also pointed to the July British designation of the Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) as a threat to UK national security.

On the other hand, Tehran justified MI6’s hostile classification by accusing it of collaboration with the Zionist regime and with countries hostile to Iran’s security and national interests. The ministry said the measures were adopted under international law and the principle of reciprocity, and held the British government responsible for their consequences.

The move follows weeks of heightened Tehran-London tensions after the United Kingdom assessed it was highly probable that the alleged plot against Fairford air base had been coordinated from Iran, and directly pointed to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard.
