Protesters rallied outside the United Arab Emirates embassy in Washington, DC to mark one year since the massacre in El Fasher in Sudan’s Darfur region, where the UAE-backed Rapid Support Forces ended an 18-month siege on the city with ethnically targeted mass executions, sexual violence, and kidnappings. More than 6,000 people were killed in just three days, according to the United Nations, and tens of thousands were displaced. The UN has recently detailed what it called “substantial” Emirati support for the RSF, including funding, weapons, mercenaries and coordination, which the UAE denies. Since war broke out between the RSF and the Sudanese army in April 2023, estimates of the death toll range as high as 400,000. More than 13 million people have been forced to flee. BT’s @esther_iverem was at the protest.
