Dutch Authorities Arrest Two Suspected Human Traffickers After Migrant Boat Is Intercepted Near Belgian Border.
On Saturday, 38 people were rescued from an inflatable boat in the North Sea, near the Dutch town of Breskens and the border with Belgium. Local authorities reported that 36 migrants and two suspected human traffickers, who have since been arrested, were on board the vessel.

“At around 6 a.m., we received a report of a suspicious situation in the North Sea, off the coast of Zeelandic Flanders. Upon arrival, we saw the inflatable boat with refugees on board,” a spokesperson for the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee told Dutch media outlets.
The boat was towed to a nearby marina, where the people on board were met by ambulances and a Red Cross emergency response team, authorities added. They were eventually transported by bus to a reception center.
The passengers’ identities, origins and final destination remain unknown. However, local media reported that an investigation is underway.

According to Dutch news agency NOS, this is the first time a boat carrying migrants has been spotted off the country’s coast, although it recalled that a group of people in transit was found on a beach near the Belgian border last April.
These types of boats, which are intended to reach the United Kingdom, are more common along the Belgian and French coasts.
However, Dutch authorities often deal with intercepting “transit equipment,” such as inflatable boats, life jackets and other items needed for the vessels, which are primarily brought into the Netherlands by road.
“At the end of 2021, we came across the first shipments in the Netherlands. We saw SUVs, vans and family cars packed with inflatable boats, outboard motors and life jackets,” they said.
