The war against Iran has cost $47.1 billion, excluding an estimated $5 billion in damage to military bases, according to a Wall Street Journal investigation.
Iranian missiles launched last July against the Muwaffaq Salti base in Jordan damaged around 19 buildings housing U.S. soldiers and killed three U.S. military personnel. That event represented a shift in Iran’s military tactics and demonstrated a greater capacity to launch attacks and hit targets with precision, the newspaper added.
The investigation noted damage to 274 buildings at 24 military facilities during the first six months of the conflict as a result of Iranian attacks.
The Pentagon considered relocating some of its military bases to areas farther from missile range, as well as withdrawing facilities in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, according to the newspaper.
A U.S. Congressional Budget Office report indicated that the Pentagon spent $38 billion on the war through last August 1.
Three sources familiar with the matter cited by the Financial Times said the administration of President Donald Trump used munitions vital for years from the beginning of the conflict.
