Mexico City’s Head of Government, Clara Brugada, invited the public to attend the tribute at the cultural institution with offerings in his memory at Zocalo square, the capital’s main public plaza.

Through official statements and on social media, lawmakers, political party representatives, labor leaders, institutions, social organizations, and higher education centers expressed sorrow over Cardenas’s death and highlighted the legacy of this icon of the political left, who died on Wednesday at the age of 92.

Politicians, prominent figures, and officials, including President Claudia Sheinbaum, joined the family at the wake held at the Panteon Frances in Mexico City on Thursday.

Tributes came from other nations, such as Cuba and Brazil.

La Jornada reported that Cardenas, who died of cancer, was presidential candidate in 1988, 1994, and 2000, founded the Party of the Democratic Revolution in 1989, and was first democratically elected Head of Government of Mexico City in 1997.

In a post on X, Sheinbaum expressed her sorrow over the passing of “a man of firm principles, who transformed political life.”
