Despite an aggressive pressure campaign by Ambassador Mike Waltz – and Havana alleging threats of retaliation by Marco Rubio’s State Department – the UN General Assembly has once again passed a resolution calling for an end to the US blockade on Cuba. The final vote count is as follows: 🟩 130 votes in favor 🟥 17 votes against ⚪ 25 abstained This year’s vote comes amid a sharp pressure escalation on Havana by the Trump administration. After the US captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in January and cut off Cuba’s main oil supply, Trump signed an executive order threatening any country that sends fuel to the island. The blockade has deepened Cuba’s energy crisis, as have broadened sanctions applied to Cuban officials and state enterprises in sectors ranging from tourism, education and cultural exchange, to business and finance.
