Hundreds of students at Detroit School of Arts and Lewis Cass Technical High School walked out of classes and marched to downtown’s Little Caesars Arena, demanding answers for the family of Nolan Wells. Wells was an 18-year-old college football player who was found dead off the Mississippi coast after a July Fourth boat trip with his friends. A grand jury declined to bring charges in the case in September, finding Wells’s death consistent with drowning. His family has rejected that ruling, as the state autopsy revealed bruising on the back of Wells’s head and did not show water in his lungs or stomach. Calls for a federal investigation into Wells’s death have spread across the US, from walkouts at HBCUs and other Southern campuses to mass rallies in Atlanta and New York.
