“The man who killed him is free. And why? Because a good, hard working Black man’s life does not matter?” Patricia Irvine, whose husband Koran Irvine was shot dead on the George Washington Bridge in Manhattan on Tuesday, allegedly by retired NYPD detective Victor Romero, says it was several hours before she was notified of the “road rage” shooting and Koran’s transportation to Englewood Hospital in New Jersey, where he later died. Prosecutors say Irvine and Romero nearly collided as they both entered the bridge’s upper level from Manhattan’s Washington Heights during Tuesday evening’s commute. Surveillance footage shows Romero tailing Irvine before pulling up beside it and firing a single shot through the rear passenger-side window, hitting Koran Irvine in the shoulder. Romero surrendered to police the next day, and was initially charged with murder. He was ultimately arraigned on first-degree manslaughter and was released Friday on $1 million bail. Irvine’s family has condemned both the reduced charge and Romero’s release. Their attorney said an independent autopsy will be conducted after Irvine’s body is released from the Bergen County Medical Examiner’s Office.

First degree manslaughter is a major undercharge. Second degree premeditated is pretty much a slam dunk.
