In a statement published on the
Cambiare Rotta website, both groups called on Italy to maintain its position in favor of lifting these measures, ahead of the vote scheduled for October 28 on the resolution titled “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba.”
The text notes that U.S. sanctions, in place for over 64 years, hinder the island’s economic and social development by limiting its access to international markets, resources, and financial systems, with consequences for essential sectors such as healthcare, education, and public services.
In the view of both organizations, the blockade seeks to obstruct the Cuban people’s right to self-determination—a right recognized under international law and the United Nations Charter.
The document asserts that the ties of friendship and cooperation between Italy and Cuba demonstrate that the island poses no threat to Europe or the rest of the world.
It also questions the possibility of Rome altering its long-standing position on the blockade, attributing such a potential shift to a possible subordination to U.S. policy under the Donald Trump administration.
Consequently, Cambiare Rotta and Student Opposition of the Alternative have called on the Italian government to vote in favor of ending the blockade on October 28, and to uphold the position the country has maintained in previous UN General Assembly votes.
