In a document published on its website, the group urged Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani to keep an independent stance on Washington’s pressure and support the will of most countries calling for an end to this policy against the island.
The text notes that the vote is scheduled for October 27-28, and points out that, since 1992, most UN member states have voted annually against this unilateral US measure, which has been in place for more than six decades.
The organization stressed that, in last year’s vote, the resolution against the embargo received 165 votes in favor, seven against, and 12 abstentions, and it warned of increased diplomatic pressure from the United States to influence the positions of other countries.
The document read that the measures adopted by the current US administration since January have worsened living conditions in Cuba, particularly for the most vulnerable sectors, and are a form of collective punishment against the population.
