University of Tübingen researchers have shown that crows, when confronted with a visual choice, make a decision twice as fast as humans and monkeys. In the experiment, two carrion crows took just 235 milliseconds on average to identify the direction in which a dot pattern was moving and to indicate their choice—while maintaining a high degree of accuracy.

I picked up a couple tinywhoop quadrocopters a couple years ago and one of the things that surprised me was how fast things happen in the air. You need a very quick response time to actively fly at those scales and it doesn’t surprise me at all that birds would have adapted to be faster decision makers.
