Ariadna Montiel maintained that the investigation into the “CIA Gate” should not stop at César Jáuregui. She insisted that Governor Maru Campos must also be tried for treason.

Mexico City, October 23 (SinEmbargo).— Ariadna Montiel Reyes, national president of Morena, accused the Governor of Chihuahua María Eugenia Campos Galván of betraying her friends and fellow party members by holding her former state prosecutor César Jáuregui responsible for the entry of Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) agents into Mexican territory. She also accused her of having broken the trust of President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo by revealing details of a private conversation they had, and maintained that the state governor should be tried for treason.

“She is not only a traitor to the Homeland, she is a traitor to her friends, a traitor to her fellow party members, and she has betrayed the trust of the President of the Republic when she reveals a private conversation, which would have nothing wrong with it if that conversation had been revealed as an agreement but, once she made it public, the President told us this morning at the press conference that it was the Governor herself who turned in, who accused her former prosecutor as responsible for this intervention,” Montiel stated in an interview with Alejandro Páez and Álvaro Delgado on the program “Los Periodistas,” which is broadcast on the SinEmbargo Al Aire channel on YouTube.

On the night of October 22, Governor Maru Campos spoke with Latinus about the conversation she had with President Claudia Sheinbaum on September 19, which was marked by mutual reproaches. Hours after that version was released, the head of the federal Executive offered her own account of the meeting and revealed that the PAN governor had held her former prosecutor, César Jáuregui, responsible for the entry of CIA agents into Mexican territory and even of illegally owning casinos.

In this regard, the Morena leader considered that the accusation against Jáuregui did not exempt Campos Galván from her alleged responsibility for the entry and operation of foreign agents in Chihuahua. On the contrary, she maintained that the version presented by Sheinbaum Pardo reinforced the questions about who had allowed the agents in and under what conditions they had operated alongside the state police.

“What she also wants is to divert attention from something that concerns all Mexicans, which is who is the person responsible for having allowed the entry into national territory and operating together with the Chihuahua state police, violating our sovereignty, who was the one who gave access to the foreign agents… it is becoming increasingly clear that it is her, through the institutions of the state,” she maintained.

Montiel insisted that political and legal responsibility must be clarified based on the participation of the state authorities. In that sense, she stated that the Governor should also be tried for Treason, in addition to the accusations faced by the former prosecutor.

“Today Prosecutor César Jáuregui is detained for Treason, and I continue to affirm that the person who should also be tried for Treason is the Governor of the state. Today she comes out with this war of slander to try to stain our record. María Eugenia can keep all her accusations, but we affirm that we are moving forward in Chihuahua,” the Morena leader stated.

Sheinbaum Revealed That Maru Blamed Her Former Prosecutor

In her interview with Latinus, Campos described the September 19 meeting as a “very strong, very tense” conversation, in which both officials exchanged reproaches and raised their voices. According to her version, Sheinbaum reproached her for the entry of US agents into Mexico, while she expressed her disagreement with the accusations of treason that, she claimed, had been made against her from the morning press conferences.

The Governor said that the President reproached her for having allowed the agents to enter “through the back door” and for having created a conflict with the United States. She also claimed that Sheinbaum mentioned three matters to her: the presence of US agents at a drug lab, the offense of having called her “the President of death,” and the presence of US agents in the Torre Centinela.

After that interview was released, Sheinbaum confirmed that the meeting had been tense and offered her version of what happened. The President said that Campos had started the conversation with complaints about the accusations of treason and that, when talking about the entry of the foreign agents, the Governor attributed responsibility to Jáuregui.

“When I told her: ‘agents came in,’ she told me: ‘it wasn’t me, it was my former prosecutor.’ But she didn’t just tell me that, she told me they had found corruption that the former prosecutor had committed,” Sheinbaum recounted from the National Palace.

The federal president explained that she recommended Campos file the corresponding complaints and offered to arrange a meeting for her with the head of the Federal Attorney General’s Office (FGR), Ernestina Godoy. According to Sheinbaum’s account, the Governor later went to the Attorney General’s Office and ratified her accusations against the former prosecutor.

“I told her: ‘why doesn’t the Chihuahua State Attorney General’s Office proceed, and if you like I’ll mention it to the Attorney General of the Republic so she can receive you,'” the President recounted.

“She Wants to Divert Attention”

Montiel rejected the accusations Campos had made against her and stated that the Governor’s accusations stem from her fear that the political transformation will advance in Chihuahua. She maintained that criticism from a PAN representative allows her to draw a distinction with the conservative project.

“For me it is a badge of pride that a conservative like María Eugenia Campos wants to point at us, because that allows us to differentiate ourselves from her. I categorically deny the accusations she has made against us; at bottom it is the fear she has that the transformation will advance in the state of Chihuahua,” she stated.

The Morena leader attributed Campos’s conduct to concern over the political and electoral landscape in the state. She maintained that the state government had a poor approval rating and claimed that Morena was in a competitive position against the PAN.

She is not loyal to the homeland, nor to her friends, nor to anyone.

Ariadna Montiel, president of Morena

“Surely the people of Chihuahua will see it; her government has a very poor rating and Morena is well ahead of Acción Nacional. Deep down, that is what had her very worried, causing these kinds of outbursts and media shows, but that is not going to solve her problem, it is going to make it worse,” she expressed.

Montiel accused the Governor of turning the conflict into a partisan dispute to divert attention from the investigation into the presence of foreign agents in Chihuahua. She also questioned the fact that Campos had publicly placed herself on the side of Acción Nacional in the political contest, instead of focusing on the explanations that, in her view, she owed about the conduct of the state institutions.

“She acts as the campaign chief of the candidate Acción Nacional has decided to back. A few days ago, when it was announced, she was wearing her PAN T-shirt. The fear of losing the state is not about who is going to govern the people of Chihuahua; rather, the fear is that all her corrupt dealings will be uncovered, mainly the one that concerns us: the treason of whoever allowed our national sovereignty to be violated,” she said.

For the president of Morena, the underlying problem was not the verbal dispute between the Governor and the President, but the need to determine who had allowed foreign agents to enter Mexican territory and take part in operations alongside the state police. For that reason, she insisted that Campos’s explanations about her former prosecutor’s responsibility were not enough to close the case.

Montiel maintained that Chihuahua’s institutional structure was a key element in establishing responsibility. She stated that the state Attorney General’s Office depended on the local Executive and used that argument to support her claim that Campos had been responsible for the decisions related to the actions of the US agents.

“The state Attorney General’s Office is not autonomous as it is in the rest of the country; the Attorney General’s Office in Chihuahua depends on the state executive, which is why we have been maintaining that the decision for the intervention of CIA agents in national territory was hers,” she stated.
