Dockworkers across Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas are preparing for a coordinated international strike and mobilizations on October 30, raising a powerful message against imperialist wars, militarization and capitalist exploitation: “Dockworkers do not work for war!”
The second International Day of Action of Dockworkers is expected to involve around 100 ports worldwide, as workers refuse to allow ports and transport infrastructure to become vital links in the machinery of imperialist war. The mobilization follows the February 6 international strike, which brought together dockworkers from 20 ports in seven countries.
Under the banner “Ports for Peace – Jobs with Dignity,” the participating unions are demanding an end to the transportation of weapons and military equipment used in wars against the peoples, while fighting for collective bargaining agreements, higher wages, stable employment, shorter working hours and stronger health and safety protections.
In Greece, dockworkers at Piers II and III of Piraeus will be joined by seafarers, shipyard workers and metalworkers. Trade unions from Turkey, Italy, France, Morocco and other countries are also participating in the international coordination, demonstrating the strength of working-class solidarity across national borders.
The October 30 mobilization sends a defiant message to governments, shipowners and monopolies: Workers will not sacrifice their lives, rights and livelihoods for the profits and wars of the imperialists.
