Aware that the organization is moving “From struggle to victory” after securing second place in the general elections—pushing the historic Popular Democratic Party (PPD) into a distant third place —PIP Secretary-General Juan Dalmau Ramirez signaled his readiness to revive an alliance, similar to the one formed in November 2024 with the Citizens’ Victory Movement (MVC).
This time, the PIP party also saw a significant presence of delegates from the diaspora in the United States, where efforts are underway to drive a decisive change—one that would finally remove the annexationist New Progressive Party (PNP) from power. The PNP has managed to keep control over the island’s government through corrupt moves.
After 128 years of Washington’s military occupation of Puerto Rico—which began during the Spanish-Cuban-American War—the island’s people currently find themselves in dire, impoverished conditions, while public services such as electricity, drinking water, and education are in the midst of a genuine crisis.
This is to say nothing of the fact that half of the 3.2 million-strong population can barely afford enough food.
Flanked by historic PIP leader Ruben Berrios Martinez, senators Maria de Lourdes Santiago and Adrian Gonzalez, and representatives Denis Marquez Lebron, Adriana Gutierrez Colon, and Nelie Lebron Robles, former gubernatorial candidate Dalmau Ramirez called for a march toward victory by uniting forces committed to the Puerto Rican nation.
Among the messages received by the PIP at its convention is one from Carlos Vega and Angel Rodriguez Leon, co-presidents of the Hostosian National Independence Movement (MINH). jdt/ga/nrm
