“We are proud to announce that we have blocked the largest museum in the world,” the students said in a leaflet distributed to inform Louvre visitors.
In their statement, the Louvre students accused the government of President Emmanuel Macron of responding to social discontent with police repression. They also denounced budget cuts, job losses and the deterioration of public services.
The protesters justified the museum blockade as a last resort after several weeks of mobilization and expressed their support for the student movement that began in the French overseas territories and spread to Paris.

The text reads, “Paris. Police violently suppressed the blockade at Sciences Po this morning. Officers arrested one student and dislocated another student’s shoulder while dragging her along the ground. Some of the students have gone to support the blockades at Saints-Pères (UPC) and the Louvre.”
“We are here to talk about the lack of funding for culture and education, and we are at the Louvre to be heard because it is a symbolic place,” said Ange, a member of Inverti.e.s, one of the youth organizations that took part in the blockade.
Dozens of tourists gathered in the Pyramid Square, waiting to enter the building. Louvre employees approached them to explain that the museum would remain closed at least for the morning and that the cost of their tickets would be refunded.
On Monday, student protests at the Louvre were accompanied by groups of workers, including members of the Culture division of the General Confederation of Labour (CGT).
