Members and supporters of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) and its youth organization, the Communist Youth of Greece (KNE), participated in the massive demonstrations in France on Saturday, October 17, expressing their solidarity with the struggles of French students, young people and workers against education cuts, social inequalities and the policies of the European Union.

The KKE and KNE organizations in France marched with a militant contingent in Paris, headed by Theodoris Kotsantis, Secretary of the KNE Central Council and member of the KKE Central Committee Secretariat. Party members and supporters also joined demonstrations in other French cities, while the KKE’s two Members of the European Parliament, Kostas Papadakis and Lefteris Nikolaou-Alavanos, had participated in an earlier protest in Strasbourg.

Speaking at the Paris demonstration, Kotsantis stressed that young people and workers in Greece and France face common problems, including EU policies, preparations for war and class barriers in education. He called for strengthening the struggle across borders, linking the French mobilizations with upcoming student demonstrations in Greece on October 21 and a nationwide general strike on November 25.

At a subsequent KKE–KNE event in Paris, Kotsantis denounced the repression of protesters by the Macron government and emphasized the importance of proletarian internationalism. He also described thousands of young demonstrators singing The Internationale, carrying  flags and raising their fists in defiance of police repression.

The Greek communists pledged to carry the momentum of the French protests into the struggles developing in Greece, under the slogan: “From Greece to France, we fight for public and free education”.
