[Sicily, Italy] The Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) is concluding its
current sailing mission and will not continue to Gaza this fall.
Following mechanical difficulties and necessary repairs that delayed the
voyage and narrowed the remaining sailing window, as well as two
devastating encounters with the bodies of migrants killed crossing the
Mediterranean, the FFC has decided to prepare for a renewed attempt to
reach Gaza in 2027. These tragic deaths are a grim reminder of the human
cost of a world built on borders, exclusion, and profound inequalities—a
world in which some people are denied even the basic right to freedom,
safety, and a future.
Despite this delay, the mission remains unchanged: to break Israel’s
illegal and deadly blockade and stand with Palestinians in their
struggle for freedom, dignity, and self-determination.
“It is an indictment of the international community that we have to keep
sailing,” said Huwaida Arraf, FFC Steering Committee member. “But we do,
because our governments have failed the greatest test of the post-World
War II era. They have not only abandoned the Palestinian people; they
have betrayed the most basic principles of morality, our shared
humanity, and the promise of ‘Never Again.’ Palestinians are being
annihilated in real time, before the eyes of the world, and our
governments are implicated.”
Since June, FFC vessels have sailed port-to-port across Europe,
mobilizing communities to demand that their governments take action for
Palestinian freedom. This organizing will continue as the FFC prepares
for its next mission.
"We set out for Gaza, and it's painful to end this voyage without
reaching it," said Frank Romano, a volunteer aboard the Kate. "The
commitment that brought us aboard remains as strong as ever. We will
carry the solidarity we have encountered in every port across Europe
into preparations for the 2027 mission."
The FFC emphasized that its sailing timetable is not a timetable for
action. Palestinians in Gaza cannot wait for safety and freedom. The
urgency is underscored by an October 9, 2026, statement from more than
120 human rights and civil society organizations warning that the
so-called "ceasefire" exists in name only; that Israel continues to kill
and maim Palestinians daily, while blocking the entry of humanitarian
aid and materials and equipment essential to recovery. The FFC calls on
governments to end their complicity in Israel's barbaric assault on
Palestinian life, halt weapons transfers and military cooperation, and
take concrete action to end Israel's illegal and deadly blockade.
The volunteers and port communities who have sustained this mission have
built a foundation for continued action. In the coming months, the
Coalition will build on those relationships and prepare for a renewed
attempt to reach Gaza. The FFC invites religious leaders, public
figures, solidarity organizations, and people of conscience to join the
preparations for the spring mission. As part of these ongoing efforts,
the Freedom Flotilla Coalition will join local partners in Catania,
Sicily, on Sunday, October 18, for “Faith at a Time of Genocide,” an
interfaith gathering bringing together religious leaders to confront the
ongoing genocide in Gaza, discuss what various faith traditions require
of us in this moment, and affirm our shared responsibility to act. The
conference will be livestreamed for those unable to attend in person.

As we continue to organize to break Israel's illegal blockade and stop
the genocide in Gaza, FFC supports the call for international volunteers
to join Palestinians in the occupied West Bank for the olive harvest.
Palestinian farmers are facing escalating violence, land theft, and
efforts to drive them from their land. We condemn the announcement of
Israel’s foreign minister that international volunteers will be rounded
up and deported, a decision made at the behest of the Yesha Council--an
umbrella organization representing Israel's illegal settlement
enterprise. That Israel is threatening peaceful international observers,
while protecting illegal, violent colonizers, speaks volumes about the
intentions and priorities of this government. States whose citizens are
threatened with arrest and deportation for standing with Palestinian
farmers must make clear that such actions will carry diplomatic
consequences. Silence and empty expressions of concern are not enough;
protecting the rights of their citizens must go hand in hand with ending
complicity in Israel’s ongoing dispossession of the Palestinian people.
