Shawn Gude is a historian, a former senior editor at Jacobin, and the current proprietor of the Debs Dispatch Substack page. He is the author of American Socialist: The Life and Legacy of Eugene V. Debs, a new biography of one of the 20th century’s most fascinating political figures. Senator Bernie Sanders called the book “An essential story about one of America’s greatest champions for workers,” while Publishers Weeklycalls it “a striking portrait.” Gude joined Current Affairs editor-in-chief Nathan J. Robinson to discuss his book, the research that went into it, and why Eugene V. Debs matters today more than ever.
