North Carolina university students walked out of classes Thursday, demanding justice for Nolan Wells. Calls for an independent federal investigation into the 18-year-old Black college student’s death in July have spread from Mississippi to Atlanta, New York, and now HBCUs and other schools across the South, after a Jackson County grand jury declared that it found “no evidence” of a crime and declined to bring charges in September. Wells’s body was found near Horn Island after a holiday boat trip with white friends. His family says they have received too few answers regarding the circumstances of his death.
