King Charles arrived in Cardiff to open the new term of the Senedd on Thursday as protesters greeted him with chants of “not my king”. The ceremonial opening is the first since the Welsh parliament grew to 96 seats. May’s expanded national election saw pro-independence party Plaid Cymru become Wales’ largest party. It’s also the first time that King Charles III has opened the Senedd as head of state. He previously attended in his role as the Prince of Wales, a controversial title that has been taken by the English son of every English monarch since Edward I colonised Wales. The last native Prince of Wales was Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, before he was killed by that conquest in 1282.
