Saudi Arabia is learning a 2,000-year-old lesson the hard way. As Ansar Allah strikes Riyadh and encircles Taiz, and Saudi-backed forces battle to retake the Red Sea coast and access to the Bab el-Mandeb, historian and former Ethiopian diplomat Mohamed Hassan tells Zoe Alexandra the Saudis don’t understand who they’re fighting – and Mohamed Bin Salman risks a crisis in the House of Saud because of it. Hassan argues no outside power can win a war in Yemen, tracing its long history of resisting foreign domination, and warns the conflict is sharpening internal contradictions in Riyadh – a "very dangerous” situation for the kingdom. He says the Saudis could end the conflict in 24 hours by halting airstrikes, agreeing to a ceasefire, and holding direct peace talks with Ansar Allah. And he unpacks how the United Arab Emirates, working in tandem with Israel, has become a “mini-imperialist” power destabilizing the Horn of Africa, from Sudan and Ethiopia to Somaliland and its push for Red Sea ports.
