Tens of thousands of people marched through central Madrid on Wednesday, as teachers in Spain’s capital region kicked off an indefinite strike demanding higher salaries, reduced workloads, and more money for public education. Police at Complutense University are facing accusations of excessive force after they charged demonstrators with batons and detained five people. The university condemned the intervention, and the national police have opened an investigation into the encounter. Public universities have also planned a two-day strike for November 4 and 5 over inadequate funding and substandard working conditions.
