"When you see that 98% of news channels’ airtime is devoted to burning rubbish bins and only 2% to our demands, of course it makes us angry!” Thousands of students, teachers, and supporters rallied in Nantes on Tuesday to demand more funding for public education. Demonstrators across France have slammed Emmanuel Macron’s government for trying to weaken the movement by restricting gatherings, shuttering campuses and over-policing the protests, rather than seriously addressing student demands, including increased school staffing, smaller class sizes and improvements to dilapidated school facilities. Weeks of youth-led mobilizations across France have closed at least 1,800 high schools, brought hundreds of thousands to the streets, and rattled Paris; the Macron government says it plans to debate further education cuts in its 2027 budget, and students say they have no plans to stand down ahead of the presidential election in April.
