Every generation of religious leadership is eventually asked the same question: what did you do while the genocide was happening?
History has recorded both answers — the religious communities that opened their doors and used their moral authority to make injustice costly, and the institutions that counseled patience, issued balanced statements, and waited for a safer moment that never came.
On 18 October, faith leaders from across traditions will join the crew of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition vessel Tenacity/Kate to face that question directly, as Gaza endures blockade, starvation and destruction. We meet at the edge of the Mediterranean — the sea that connects us to Gaza, and the sea across which the flotillas sail to challenge the blockade.
Tenacity/Kate set sail on August 17, 2026 from Bristol, UK. It visited Kinsale in Ireland, Brest in France, Bilbao, Santander, Lastres, Vigo and Caleta de Vélez in the Spanish state. The boat is due to arrive in Sicily this week.
The conference will address:
The moral obligation to act — what our traditions demand of us in the face of mass atrocity, now.
Lessons from history — when religious communities applied effective pressure, and when religious institutions were complicit or silent.
From statement to action — concrete commitments for the months ahead.
