Federal agents searched the Washington, D.C. area home of Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar early Monday as part of an ongoing criminal investigation into alleged fraud in the congresswoman’s immigration records.
The search took place before dawn on Monday, in the Washington, D.C. area. A Justice Department spokesperson confirmed that the action was authorized by a judge and said it forms part of a federal criminal investigation that continues to develop.
The raid occurred only weeks before the midterm elections, placing a sitting member of Congress at the center of an active federal inquiry as voters prepare to head to the polls.

Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), part of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), carried out the operation in coordination with the Department of Justice (DOJ)
People close to the case said the procedure derives from an investigation into alleged immigration fraud in the congresswoman’s documents. Those records were processed by her late father when she was a child, which means the allegations under review reach back to her earliest years in the country.
I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation.
I will not be…

Alleged Immigration Fraud
The intervention aligns with what border czar Tom Homan announced in mid-September, when he said the lawmaker was subject to a criminal process. A federal prosecutor separately indicated that the statute of limitations could prove decisive regarding older accusations connected to her 2009 marriage. That detail suggests parts of the case may turn on records that are now years old.
Omar, who was born in Somalia, has represented Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District since 2019. A prominent voice on the left wing of the Democratic Party, she was the first Somali and the first Muslim woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.
She is also an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly made her a target of his rhetoric. Civil rights advocates have long questioned the accusations directed at her and at the broader Somali-American community, pointing to both the verbal attacks and episodes of physical aggression she has faced over her progressive positions.
Finances Under Scrutiny
The federal operation lands amid separate scrutiny of the lawmaker’s finances. Her disclosure statements show that assets she shared with her husband fell from an estimate of between $6 million and $30 million in 2024 to a maximum of $125,000 in 2025. The shift amounts to roughly 29.9 million dollars.
Combined with student loan and credit card debts held by the couple, that drop suggests a possible negative net worth.
The raid unfolded during a second Trump term in which the United States has revoked 250,000 visas. Federal authorities have offered no timeline for the next phase of the investigation, leaving the case open as the midterms approach.
Supporters of the investigation may argue that no one is above the law, while critics may question whether the case is politically motivated, given the president’s history of attacking the congresswoman.
