Resisting police repression, India’s opposition parties and youth protesters marched to the Supreme Court in New Delhi on Monday, demanding the resignation of India’s chief election commissioner over alleged misconduct in a voter roll revision. The demonstrations marked the latest confrontation with authorities in the heavily fortified capital. The massive demonstration defied a strict security clampdown to protest the deletion of voters from the rolls and call for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to step down. More than 133 million names have been removed from voter lists since last year, according to media reports, out of about 969 million people eligible to vote in India’s 2024 polls. Critics say the large-scale revision could benefit Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
