Two people were injured. The school principal was shot outside the school, French daily Le Figaro reported, citing police. A 37-year-old female teacher was also injured in the shooting. Both victims received medical treatment and are not in danger.

Aubagne Mayor Jean-Pierre Squillari explained that the students did not witness the incident because it occurred in a hallway while they were in class.

The 14-year-old, a student at Joseph Lakanal Middle School, entered the building and first shot the principal, then the teacher. The teenager was subsequently subdued and disarmed by the school’s senior adviser.

French media outlets indicated that the armed attack might not be related to student protests given that no demonstration took place at Joseph-Lakanal Middle School.

“Parents, explaining that their children had witnessed the bloody attack, expressed their concern; the prefect and the mayor tried to make reassuring statements,” The Cradle Turkiyeit reported.

French President Emmanuel Macron praised the actions of those who managed to stop the shooter, thereby preventing a massacre.

“I commend the composure and exemplary response of the educational staff, which helped prevent the worst,” he said and expressed his “full solidarity” and “total support” for the principal, the teacher, the students and the parents who were “shocked” by the incident.
